Denver City Council Clears the Way for Wynkoop Crossing, Ball Arena Redevelopment's First Major Infrastructure Project
DENVER, CO — Denver City Council has approved an intergovernmental agreement clearing the way for the construction of Wynkoop Crossing, a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge that will connect Lower Downtown to Ball Arena and serve as the first major infrastructure project within Kroenke Sports & Entertainment's long-term Ball Arena redevelopment.

The agreement allows the bridge to be constructed across publicly owned land over Speer Boulevard, representing another major milestone for the 55-acre redevelopment that will gradually transform Ball Arena's surrounding parking lots into a mixed-use neighborhood featuring housing, hotels, entertainment venues, retail space, and expanded public open space.
Stretching from Chopper Circle at Ball Arena to Lower Downtown near Manny's Bridge and the Downtown Children's Playground, Wynkoop Crossing is designed to improve connections between downtown Denver, Ball Arena, the Cherry Creek Trail, and future development surrounding the arena. The bridge will feature two 16-foot-wide shared-use paths for pedestrians, cyclists, and scooters, along with ADA-accessible ramps and stairways on both ends.
Beyond creating a new crossing over Speer Boulevard, the project is intended to reconnect neighborhoods that have long been separated by one of downtown's busiest roadways. Project materials describe Wynkoop Crossing as a key piece of public infrastructure that will improve multimodal mobility while helping create a safer and more walkable connection between Lower Downtown and the emerging Ball Arena district. The bridge also establishes new links to the Cherry Creek Trail and future portions of Denver's planned 5280 Trail network.

The Lower Downtown landing will include landscaped gathering spaces, seating, Colorado Red sandstone elements inspired by Denver's historic streetscapes, and improved access to nearby parks and trails. The bridge's architectural design was developed to respond to both the historic character of LoDo and the contemporary mixed-use neighborhood planned around Ball Arena.
According to project information presented during the approval process, construction could begin as early as the fourth quarter of 2026. The bridge will be financed, operated, and maintained by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment's metropolitan districts rather than through Denver taxpayer funding.
Once complete, Wynkoop Crossing will become one of the defining public infrastructure projects within the Ball Arena redevelopment, creating a direct connection between downtown Denver and what is planned to become one of the city's largest new mixed-use neighborhoods.
