Trader Joe’s Plans New Location at Northfield

DENVER, CO – A new addition is in the works for northeast Denver as plans have been filed with the city that confirm a Trader Joe’s is planned for the Shops at Northfield.

The project would bring a 12,500-square-foot grocery store to the vacant lot just north of Old Navy, along Northfield’s eastern edge. Plans including 31 dedicated parking, new pedestrian access points, and direct circulation from 47th Avenue.

While city filings were originally labeled only as “Northfield Grocers,” architectural site plan elevations make clear that the tenant is Trader Joe’s. This would mark another expansion of the grocer’s footprint in the Denver metro area, and a highly anticipated arrival for residents of Central Park and surrounding neighborhoods.

A Boost for Northeast Denver

Northfield has seen steady retail growth over the past decade, but the addition of Trader Joe’s would fill a long-noted gap in grocery options. For many nearby residents, the closest Trader Joe’s has been a drive to Cherry Creek, Capitol Hill, or Greenwood Village. A new store at Northfield would bring the brand’s cult-followed private label products, prepared meals, and specialty selections much closer to home.

The site itself spans about 0.29 acres of the broader 33.7-acre Northfield development parcel. With a planned height of just under 30 feet, the single-story shopfront building will sit comfortably within the existing retail context.

Construction Timeline

The project was filed under formal site development plan (SDP) application is currently marked as “Additional Info Required.” That means the development team will need to submit updated materials to city staff before moving forward through the review process.

No construction timeline has been released, and Trader Joe’s itself has not formally announced the location. However, the site plan evidence strongly ties the project to the grocer.

If built, the Northfield Trader Joe’s will join a network of locations across Colorado that continue to draw loyal shoppers. It also represents a win for northeast Denver’s retail mix, reinforcing the city’s strategy of activating commercial hubs outside the downtown core.
