The City of Denver Plans to Turn Skyline Park Into Downtown’s “Front Yard”
DENVER, CO – A major transformation is continuing to move forward for Downtown Denver’s Skyline Park as the city works to completely reimagine one of the center city’s most recognizable public spaces.
Current Construction Ongoing at Skyline Park (May 2026) | Developing Denver
The long-planned redevelopment project focuses on creating a much more active, accessible, and year-round destination in the heart of downtown Denver while improving how the park connects with surrounding streets, businesses, and public activity areas.
Current plans for Block 2 of Skyline Park, located between 16th and 17th Streets along Arapahoe Street, include a large interactive water plaza that will convert into a seasonal ice skating rink during winter months. Additional features planned throughout the redesign include shaded picnic groves, upgraded landscaping, outdoor dining areas, event space, fire terraces, improved pedestrian connections, and a new café and seasonal bar.

The redesign also aims to remove many of the walls, stairs, and barriers that currently separate portions of the park from surrounding downtown streets. Project designers say the goal is to create a more open and flexible public space capable of supporting both everyday activity and larger downtown events throughout the year.
According to project materials, community feedback collected throughout the planning process consistently emphasized the need for more greenery, stronger social activation, additional cultural programming, and improved year-round usability throughout Skyline Park.

Originally constructed during the 1970s as part of Downtown Denver’s larger urban renewal efforts, Skyline Park was designed by renowned landscape architect Lawrence Halprin as an “urban oasis” within the city center. Over time, however, multiple redesigns and fragmented updates gradually changed how the space functioned and limited accessibility throughout portions of the park.
The updated vision for Skyline Park is being led through a partnership between Denver Parks and Recreation, the Downtown Denver Partnership, and design firm RIOS. The broader long-term concept envisions Skyline Park functioning as Downtown Denver’s “front yard” with expanded recreation, concerts, festivals, dining, and year-round public gathering space.
Construction activity tied to the first phase of improvements is now underway, with additional planning and future funding efforts for the remaining sections of Skyline Park expected to continue moving forward in future phases.
